IEEE CIS > Technical Activities
Bioinformatics and Bioengineering TC
Name
This organization is known as the Bioinformatics and Bioengineering Technical
Committee (BBTC) of the Computational Intelligence Society (CIS) of the Institute of Electrical
and Electronic Engineers (IEEE).
Purpose and Scope
The purpose of the BBTC is to promote the research, development,
education, and understanding of computational intelligence methods in the application areas of
bioinformatics, bioengineering, and computational biology.
Membership
The BBTC is open to any members of the IEEE, as well as to other technical
professionals as affiliates. There are three grades of members: active, non-active, and affiliate.
Active members are those who regularly participate in BBTC activities and meetings and shall
be eligible to vote on matters before the committee. Non-active members are those who have an
interest in the BBTC activities but are unable to actively participate. Non-active members will
automatically become active members when present at a BBTC meeting. Affiliates are non-IEEE
members who have an interest in BBTC activities and meetings, but will not be eligible to vote
on matters before the committee.
Officers
The BBTC Chair shall be appointed by the President of the CIS based on the
recommendations from the committee, for a one-year term and up to a maximum of two terms.
Each November, the BBTC shall make recommendation to the President for appointment as
BBTC Chair for the following year.
Funding
There is no membership fee for joining the BBTC. Funding for the committee shall be
provided by the CIS in the annual budget request. Once approved by the CIS AdCom, funds will
be available to support the BBTC activities. The Chair shall be responsible for the appropriate
use of the approved funds.
Activities
The BBTC shall engage in various activities in order to promote the wider acceptance
of computational intelligence as a viable technology, including but not limited to the following:
organize special sessions for CIS-sponsored conferences, participate in paper reviews and
selection for CIS-sponsored conferences, nominate lecturers for the CIS distinguished speakers
program, collaborate on production of tutorials, promote IEEE Senior Members and Fellows
program, sponsor publication of books or CDs, and organize specialized focused symposia,
workshops, or meetings. The BBTC will actively work with the organizers of CIS-sponsored
conferences to ensure and maintain technical excellence.
Meetings
Meetings will be called by the Chair one or two times a year usually before the CIS
AdCom meetings, or at the IEEE Symposium on Computational Intelligence in Bioinformatics
and Computational Biology, or as requested by the BBTC members. Sufficient advanced notice
of the meetings will be given to the members, as well as all other interested parties. The Chair
shall prepare an agenda before the meeting, and shall prepare minutes for distribution after the
meeting.
Amendments
This Charter becomes official after at least 2/3 membership approval.
Subsequent changes and amendments also require 2/3 majority vote.
