Standards Committee

Activities

1. IEEE CIS Standards Committee offers a list of links to many popular data sets that CIS professionals consider as data sets of choice for a variety of computational experiments. Most popular tasks that can be tested with the data include: Optimization, Prediction, Classification, Pattern Recognition, Computer Vision, Data Mining, Decision Tree Generation, Intelligent Control, Linguistic Rule Extraction, Decision Support Systems in Business, Medicine and other fields. Various soft computing techniques, e.g. neural networks, evolutionary algorithms and fuzzy systems, can be tested by making use of suggested benchmarks. We hope that this project of the Standards Committee will surely benefit many CIS tools developers, graduate students, authors and researchers who always look for common reference points when preparing papers, dissertations and filing for patents.

2. We extent the scope of our activity beyond the traditional tasks of standards committees working in various IEEE societies. The IEEE CIS Standards Committee proposes the article by J. M. Mendel, H. Hagras and R. I. John, as the Standard for researchers working in the area of type-2 fuzzy logic systems: "Standard Background Material About Interval Type-2 Fuzzy Logic Systems that can be Used by All Authors". From the authors: "This Standard consists of background material about interval type-2 fuzzy sets, interval type-2 fuzzy logic systems (IT2 FLSs), type-reduction and defuzzification in an IT2 FLS, and an IT2 FLS that does not use type-reduction. As a service to the fuzzy logic community we give all authors permission to use any or all of this material in their articles, as long as they give reference to this Standard." The Standard is available as follows:

3. Comparison of various algorithms by competitions (contests). Contestants have to carry out experiments in exactly the same conditions (the same initial conditions, the same data sets, etc.). Only selected topics for competitions should be proposed. In 2006 three competitions will be organized: two in Vancouver at WCCI 2006 and a similar competition in Zakopane at ICAISC 2006.
